This is by far going to be my most broad and thorough playlists on spotify that I create. This is my genre, in all forms. There are very few subgenres and fusion genres that I dont get into. This particular playlist features everything from Ambient, Dub, French House, Deep House, Electro, Electronic, Big Beat, Trip Hop, Remix projects and more.

• Where are you from and where are you currently based out of?
  I was born and raised in Nashville, TN.  Currently based in Nashville and L.A.

• Tell us about your connection to Ru Paul.
  We got our boobs done together. No, I’m joking!  I had written him a fan letter once, and he called me to thank me for writing it.   After moving to West Hollywood I emailed Ru. I started it with the whole “You probably doesn’t remember me…” and being that we both live In WEHO, I suggested that maybe we could meet. About a week later he walked up to me at the Beverly Center and surprised the hell out of me. He has been a great friend and mentor ever since.

• How’s the scene in LA?
  I really love it.  I am lucky to have made it in the best clubs pretty much right away. The DJs there are amazing and have really helped my music get heard. Very grateful for that!  The sisterhood with most of the Queens in the scene there is pretty amazing. Florida native Detox iCunt was really my first Queen friend and has always been real supportive of me.   I am dying to know is how’s the scene in Florida? And when can I come over?

• Who are some of your influences (Drag , Music or otherwise)
  Wow, there are so many.  RuPaul, of course. Mariah Carey, Vicky Vox iCunt, the women in my family and I think we’ve all been influenced by Oprah.

•  Is “Right on track” your first excursion into music?
  Dance music, yes.  Music in general, no.  I went to Berklee College of Music on a full vocal scholarship and around that time began writing my own music.  I formed a band in Nashville and we did pretty good playing the local scene, then I moved to Los Angeles.

• How did you hook up with Hollywood Giants?
  On GrindR. Kidding again! While performing at a local lound, the resident DJ (Jim Straz) asked if I would consider singing along with my performances. I had recorded a demo with a group that got shelved. Sometime after, we decided to go forward with a solo version.  We started shopping for producers that week and the rest is soon to be history!

Edition 4: MAX PIX 8.

During my high school years, the rave culture was in full bloom. I felt a very strong connection to this musical movement that was new and completely belonged to my generation.

Yes, it was drug-fueled. Yes, it was spaced out. but it was also an unfathomable exploration into uncharted cerebral territory.

The futuristic sound was linked to a futuristic, eutopian way of thinking (P.L.U.R.: peace, love, unity, and respect) that was coupled by experimental music, dress, experimental drug use, and almost a post-apocalyptic “Mad Max” vibe, if you will. Everyone was “tuning in and dropping out.”

This caused the record industry to take electronic acts seriously, and provide serious budgets. There were a rash of albums that I consider electronica gold, that were echoes of what was going on in warehouses, fairground spaces, and eventually, stadiums.

If you ask me about the royal family of the rave culture, The Prodigy, Daft Punk, Chemical Brothers, Underworld, Moby, Future Sound of London, Crystal Method, and Fatboy Slim come to mind. These acts not only dominated the culture but also headlined every festival from here to Timbuktu (literally).

I will get around to reviewing my favorite must-haves from each of those acts (check back for that soon), but I have to start with the group whose debut full-length album was branded in my psyche as a permanent reminder of my teen years.

The duo from Manchester, the Chemical Brothers, are credited for being the pioneers of “big beat,” in essence a British answer to American hip-hop and b-boy culture featuring record producing heavy in samples and loops.

Their debut album Exit Planet Dust, would be considered the epitome of electronic beats by many Americans. However, it is in fact intentionally hip-hop oriented. Most tracks range from 90-115 beats per minute, the more “dance” tracks at a cool 122 bpm. The tracks take you on a journey, as if to reflect their infamous live DJ sets that were a fixture at London’s Heavenly Sunday Social Club.

The album is a devilish blend of acid house, trip-hop, big beat, and old school hip-hop samples. The most haunting and enigmatic track is “Alive Alone,” which features a very melancholic Beth Orton. Other worthy tracks are, “Life is sweet“ (whose single includes a rare remix by early Daft Punk), “Three Little Birdies Down Beats,“ and “Fuck UP Beats.”

Seems like 2012 is going to just as much of a euphoria fueled rock dance party as 2011 was in the music world, and I love it. The Dance/Hip-hop/Rap collabs just keep coming, and the Rockers are racking up the remixes.  Choice year to be a DJ! We are also in a leap year and coming out of a money bag year so “Live long and prosper”, songs about money ALWAYS work. Try whistling these at work; it will make your day go by sooo much better.

MUSIC SCENE:

Jei – “Show me the Money” The Remixes.  The VH1 Bad girl darling of South Florida keeps pulling out the punches left and right. After a flurry of touring her single and racking up her street cred’ with a recent performance at a defected showcase in NYC, Jei adds even more club stompers to her ever growing list. “Show me the Money” remix EP features remixes by International Super star singer/Producer Ceevox, DJ Le Brion, and More.

Penguin Prison – “Don’t Fuck with my Money”. Think the soulful wailing of a pissed off Purple Rain era Prince and the joyful angst of The Killers singing about Money layered over scintillating electro house beats. The remix Package doesn’t disappoint with Electronic, Nu-Disco and Deep House versions by Dave Aude’ , Reed McGowan, Krush and Sammy Bananas.

Flo Rida feat. Sia – “Wild Ones” The Midas touch by Guetta is obvious here, and it’s the first ANTHEM of 2012 by my accounts, remixes floating around sound amazing. Flo ventures further into new ground after experimenting with some singing on “Good feeling”.

Gloria Estefan – “Hotel Nacional.” The Queen of Caribbean pop makes a super comeback with her single “Hotel Nacional” which debuted at Number 1 this week. Fresh off the heels of “Wepa”, the effervescent dance track features a throwback to early 90’s handbag house with its jitterbug 20’s flare over a pumping bed of synths and strings. The Remixes by Ralphi Rosario, Razor’ N’ Guido and more deliver even more. Gloria recently held a Female impersonators contest to win a coveted spot in her upcoming video; we hear 2 south Florida icons also made the cut: Erika Norell and Vinna Rouge, That’s going to be a KICK ass video.

I dug in deep into some of my favorite lyric-driven, sample-based Hip Hop and R & B classics. There are some slow jams in here, as well as stuff from before and after the East Coast/West Coast Gangsta Rap Era (from both coasts and the south). I used to be quite the connoisseur of Hip Hop , the kind that was poetic and skillfully written. Text book: rap roots, danceable beats, use of call-and-response vocals, lyrics about the rap industry and ambiguous lyrics. Featuring A Tribe Called Quest, Outkast, SWV, Erykah Badu, Beastie Boys, Wu-Tang Clan, Digable Planets, KRS-One, The Pharcyde, and more.
